The new Courtenay Library has become a source of great civic pride for the local community and has assisted the ongoing rejuvenation of its historic downtown. The single storey structure features extensive use of locally milled douglas fir in both its exposed heavy timber structure and its Island manufactured doors, windows and interior trim. Natural lighting is emphasized in the double height central space and at reading carrels and lounge seating along perimeter walls. With its raised entry plinth and central glazed gable element facing the street, the Library has a compelling urban presence during the day and after dark.

As project architect directing the design phase, Jim collaborated with firm principal and mentor Paul Merrick, the City of Courtenay (Client) and Vancouver Island Public Library (Tenant) to develop an inspirational design for City residents and users.
